the channel heritage centre

this is a little gem in an unexpected location. lots of local history, great for all ages with dioramas of different ages, locations. well worth stopping.

We stopped here to ask where the "Margate Train" was, Phyl told us where it was, BUT, instead of leaving we decided to have a look around the centre, it is free to go in, all they ask is for is a donation, this Centre is filled to the brim with history, this place is well worth the visit, the volunteers that run this lovely Heritage Centre would have to be the nicest people in Tasmania, we decided not to go the Margate Train for lunch, instead we had it here, well, that was the best decision we made, the food was wonderful, I had the Salmon Quiche, YUM, YUM, YUM

This place is run by volunteers who do a great job and are very enthusiastic. There is so much to see and you could spend ages here. Actually you probably need a few visits to take it all in. However it was the grandkids who were absolutely amazed at the depiction of rural life in the area from settlement to now. The shop, school, and kitchen were particular hits with them.There is space available for a variety of monthly exhibitions which should be interesting to locals who have had their fill of multiple visits. Or maybe just to have a coffee or light meal in the café and look at the local craft is the go!Entry is free (always a plus) but they deserve a donation on your way out- actually make it a note donation! A great resource for the area and a visit is recommended.

If you are interested in the history of the Channel district and how people lived in the yesteryears including the '67 bush fires period it is a must see. Just a donation. Have a cuppa and snack as well.

At first glance this unassuming building could easily be overlooked, but once inside it is a virtual tardis of information. Brilliant displays, memorabilia, information and videos all set up in an interesting and appealing way to illustrate the history of the area and life in years gone by. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff. Free admission is a bunus.

Staffed by volunteers, this museum is full of memories of yesteryear. So many exhibits excellently and lovingly prepared and displayed. The lovely volunteers there during our visit imparted so much knowledge and information and it was obvious they loved what they did and were proud of their museum. Of particular interest to us was the incredible collection of photographic materials and cameras... just amazing! Refreshments and bathroom facilities are available.All for a coin donation, this museum is terrific and a credit to all connected with it. Make sure you drop by for a look!

Visit the many displays depicting life as it was4. To recover from the journey, visit the Cafe for a well-earned cuppa and piece of delicious cake5. Tell everyone you see of your journey

Short off the cuff visit. Great exhibits. Will have to go back for a proper look. Also great little coffee & local handmade crafts. Well done Ron, Phyll, & Kees.

There really is so much to see here. There's a real wealth of artefacts and information in depth. The recreated chapel, schoolroom and shop are excellent. I'm not sure about the room full of cameras - as far as I know there's no link between Kodak and the Channel - maybe this should have it's own museum somewhere else? That aside, the curators and those who donated objects, photos and information should be proud of themselves.

A comprehensive small museum about 15-20 mins south of Hobart in Margate on the Channel Highway (continuation of A6 Southern Outlet from Hobart). Extensive artifacts and memorabilia of settlers in the area, Good insight to life in the 19th century & early to mid 20th century. Good home made food in the small cafe. All on single level. Ample parking.

Well set out displays in a modern building. Also attached, is a reseach/reading room.Allow 2 hours to look at everything. Cafe is good for a sandwich, light hot meal or coffee. Small gift shop with books and gifts.Friendly staff, good easy parking, toilets clean.
