Pleasantly country quirky stopover on route to somewhere else. The train (a Tasmanian institution aka The Tasman Limited in its heyday) now houses several little shops selling knick knacks, books, brick-a-brack, candles and other handmade souvenirs, a pancake carriage, restaurant and lovely coffees. On a nice day you can sit outside in a pleasant garden setting and when it's cold, as it was today, the carriage table seating is olde worlds and very cosy. There is a marvellous Turkish food van which makes the best Gozlemes I can recall eating (try the lamb and spinach - yum!!). Well worth a stop!

what a way to convert a train!! the Pancake carriage made excellent coffee, the lolly shop was a trip down memory lane. Not all were open the day we visited but we still left smiling!!

We stopped at the Margate train on the way back to Hobart and found a gem of a food van. A Turkish family from the Black Sea have set up a van selling kebabs, koftes and gozleme in authentic Turkish fashion. Reasonable prices and ideal as a take away or to be eaten on a plate with salads and drinks at one of the tables by the train carriages. Good parking.

Decommissioned old steam train, great pancakes in one carriage and lolly shop in another - fun for the kids.

Have previously been to this shop every other weekend and spend $20-$30 (say $650 pa), daughter accidently dropped 10-12 tiny lollies from the pick and mix (small tablet size), when we politely alerted the 'boy' behind the counter and asked what we could do to help, told in a surly tone that could not be mistaken "pick them up would be good".Never again

The whole Margate Train is a bit of a hope with carriages each holding a 'shop'. Some were open and some weren't and we thought we would pop into the Pancake Carriage. Not cheap but very tasty pancakes and delicious scones. Lovely coffees as well, so given the weather was a little on the cool side sitting in original seating of a bygone era with a yummy meal was just perfect. There is also a nice antiques shed behind the train. Some choice furniture and other items if you lived close by. Just a bit too big for a traveller.

Beautiful old train now used for attraction and retail. Lovely people and shops. Yummy pancakes, fantastic barber, great lolly shop, good antiques and gorgeous gift shop (white doily lane) plus more. Highly recommend.

Margate train really is a great landmark and place to stop for delicious pancakes and great little shops as well as the interesting antiques in the big shed at the end. The carriages act as shops and the cafes have good outdoor seating as well. A great bonus when you have small kids with you is the sandpit with trucks and things for kids to play safely while parents eat. Well worth the stop for all sorts of reasons!

Over the years I have been to The Margate Train quite a few times. Yesterday I went with my eldest daughter and her three children. The train is stationary and has several carriages. There is a pancake shop which sells a variety of things and one can eat inside the carriage or outside. We chose outside. I had a lemon and sugar pancake with ice cream and cream ( I lashed out) and it was yummy! My daughter enjoyed pumpkin soup served with Turkish bread. 11 yr old grand daughter was happy with her toasted sandwich whilst 6 yr old grand daughter had a child size pancake. 17mth old grandson had a muffin and then played in the small children area which has sand and dump trucks, small playhouse and slide. Could be better but is adequate! One carriage has a good selection of second hand books neatly organised and the lolly shop is very popular! The antique store is housed at the end in a sep building with reasonable prices, organised and good selection. There is also a building which sells carpets and rugs. I find that an odd place to be selling this product so not sure how much business they do. Parking is good.

The Margate Train is a quirky and relaxing spot well worth the visit. The old trains carriages are converted into a pancake restaurant, sweet shop and an eclectic nicknack store.During my last couple of pancake visits I've found the staff to be a little hit and miss with how friendly/professional they are towards fellow guests; staff being distracted and grumpy is never a good look. That said the food and atmosphere is incredibly enjoyable and well worth the stop. The train is fairly small as far as seating capacity with some outdoor seating but the turn over is pretty quick so it's well worth the wait.

We stopped here when passing on our way to Oyster Bay. It is a stationary train with a selection of retail outlets in the carriages. There are other retail outlets in buildings on the same site, it was different and a pleasant place to stop would I go again maybe to the antique shop but otherwise no.

I have been dropping in here for years and there is always something interesting and very reasonably priced. It is not far out of Hobart at all and is well worth the visit.

Visit the Margate Train and jump onboard the pancake carriage for the most delicious pancakes. I had the Devonshire Pancake with real raspberry jam and fresh cream... Yummo!

The Margate Train is a huge old stationary train that has had the carriages converted into shops. The kids loved to crawl up into the engine and play with the few levers still left intact (most of it has been gutted) and you can easily sit up there with them. It's actually really interesting to look at. I can't comment on the shops as after we played on the train we headed down to the little sand and the kids were tearing around on the little bikes and scooters they had available. The sandpit also has lots of big dump trucks to play with. There's a small section of grass surrounding the pit and picnic tables with umbrellas to sit and watch.I did look at the prices of the pancake train and was a bit shocked; $20+ for a pancake with savoury topping? I hope they are good!

Called in here on our way back to Hobart. Checked out the Antique Shop and found a lovely Huon Pine chopping board for a good price. Decided to stay for Scones and a homemade sausage roll both were very good although we had to wait for the scones to be baked but they were worth it. Unique setting sitting in the train well worth a stop. The Lolly shop was good as well.
