I guess I expected a little more from the tour. When we arrived we were instructed to walk out to the bogs and view the harvesting. The Flax Pond was dry harvesting and the next farm over was water harvesting which was accessible to view through the same roads. My issue was that at no time was there anyone from either farm available to answer questions. Everyone was walking around viewing the harvest but no one wanted to yell down into the bogs to disturb the workers. The sorting machine and tour inside the barn is great, just the bog portion that could use improvement. The bathrooms were only Porto-potties. The other issue was the cost of cranberries. My wife makes jams and we were looking to purchase 30 lbs of cranberries. If I remember they can only sell 10% of there crop, the rest must go to Ocean Spray. Ocean Spray then sells to stores where you can purchase them. In short, why is it $1.00 per pound more expensive to buy directly from the grower than if I would just drive down to Costco and purchase it. Add two middle men and you'll save a lot of cash????????
This was one of those places we stumbled on by complete accident. A family run Cranberry bog - coming from the UK we had no idea what to expect. A couple of generations of the family spent a good hour explaining things to us - really interesting. Also included a demo of some old machinery and a shop selling a wide range of Cranberry products. No entry fee, but really worth a visit if you want to learn about Cranberries
Hi,I went with a friend using a discounted voucher. I really didn't know what to expect. The tour lasted about 2 hours. Our tour guide began with a history of cranberry growing and showed us some photos. Then we headed out to the bogs where we met a farmer who talked about the family business and lots of history of cranberry growing, types of berries and how they are harvested. We then went to another bog and hand picked some berries using an old and newer dry rake (yes, we were able to keep the berries we picked!). Next we went to another farm and met the owner/farmer who described wet harvesting. We watched the workers actually harvesting the soggy bog. Then to the last stop, a working farm with a shop. The owner/farmer sorted and gave us all bags of fresh and dried berries. We tried hot mulled cranberry cider and chatted with the owners for a bit. A great afternoon!! Sorry to see that some of the other reviews didn't have the great day we had....Thanks!
Enjoyed the tour, the beautiful setting, and the interesting shopping experience. A good stop to learn about cranberry growing and production.
