I loved this art gallery. This is a very old building, built in 1880 with a "new" mirror addition in 1901 and it is just beautiful. I want to live there! The courtyard and grand staircase inside are magnificent. I can just imagine holding a fancy party here in the early 1900s... The lady inside was very helpful and we talked awhile about the area, the building, the art gallery and the original owners. The art is very old, but they do hold events to attract more modern visitors. Currently, there was a pumpkin decorating exhibit, and in another room a modern photo exhibit. I found this art gallery while following the "Autumn Splendor" arts&crafts tour in Beaver Falls, New Brighton, and Beaver & I highly recommend this self guided tour next year.

Hidden away in quiet New Brighton, Beaver County, about 30 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, is the Merrick Art Gallery. Other reviews have told the story of Edward Merrick and his spending of his fortune on gorgeous art of the 19th century -- both European and American. There is much to be seen here -- spend some time with each painting, and you will find something special to appreciate. There are portraits, seascapes, landscapes, and scenes of dramatic events. A room setting shows some furnishings related to New Brighton. You can spend a quiet afternoon here, and at a reasonable price -- free! There is free parking on the street, too.

Located in the small town of New Brighton, Pennsylvania, this facility has been in existence since the early 1900's and has been the benefactor of the Merrick Family a local family with deep ties to the community. Special shows are presented at various times during the year as well as the Christmas season. This facility is well worth visiting and many school field trips end up here.

Edward Merrick was a wealthy industrialist living in the manufacturing town of New Brighton, PA during the nineteenth century. He was interested in art and traveled to Europe to acquire a collection of paintings from who he deduced were the most famous painters of the age. Little did he know that a revolution in art was just about to turn the art world upside down. This art gallery is a remarkable trip into the past where you get to see the works by artists soon to be eclipsed by the now famous names of Van Gogh, Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso, etc. Paintings of classic ladies from Roman times sitting in idyllic country settings that were soon to be discarded by the abstractions of the new age. American painters are represented through the Hudson School. Paintings fill the walls from all heights and remind me of pictures of late nineteenth century salons. This is a step back into time and was thoroughly enjoyed.
