Traprap

DeSmetguy

A wonderful winery with a beautiful view of the valley. We took a private tour and our guide was very nice and informative, he answered all our questions. The winery has also a art collection museum with paintings that are like real photographies, I was impressed about the perfection!! Great and affordable good wines. We really enjoyed the visit.

Our guide - Samantha was very educated and informative about the winery. She was also very approachable & answered all questions. The artwork is edgy and not to everyone's taste - but we found some we enjoyed, The wine is delicious & we enjoyed the tasting. Good way to spend an afternoon in Napa!

This is a winery, tasting room and art museum all in one! Such a neat concept. And besides that, the estate is sitting atop Mt. Veeder so the views are beautiful! The grounds are very pretty, as are the buildings. You have to drive up a windy road about 15 minutes from town to get there so the views on the way there are beautiful as well. It is a modern art gallery, which isn't for everyone, but still neat to see. The tasting room is on the top floor. The wine was good and the hosts pouring were very friendly and knowledgeable. I tried a 100% Charbono varietal which I had never had before. I liked it so much I ended up buying a bottle. I definitely recommend visiting the Hess Collection if you are in the Napa area!

The Hess Winery is know for Modern Art as well as wine. And this was a treat. We enjoyed the laid back, go at your own pace opportunity to see this amazing collection. The wine was great as well. A wonderful start to a day of wine tasting.

Go for the art. World class art pieces from Bacon, Stella, Rosenquist and others - from the Hess collection. Our tour guide estimated that only 15% of Hess' collection was displayed; the rest is in Switzerland.. Two floors of beautiful paintings and sculptures. Do not miss this private art collection. Oh, and the winery is lovely.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences, it sounds like you had a good time. The art you describe is actually part of several works from environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy, and has nothing to do with cows or, ahem, cow pies. On the wall are some intriguing prints made from melting ink laden snow on canvas. On the floor are a series of sea rocks melted under extreme heat to form interesting shapes. In fact, there is a small theater alongside the display where you can see the kiln process in action. And, of course, at the end of the hall is "Surface Tension" a wonderful piece constructed of thorns. Andy Goldsworthy is surely one of the most interesting natural artists working today, and a simple search will find much more to consider, but not much about cows... We'll look forward to seeing you again. The sense of discovery, for art and wine, is a wonderful part of the experience of visiting, and sharing makes it even better.
