Well preserved over 100-year-old Catholic Church, now a landmark monument, not an active church. A docent was present to give us lots of useful information.

While driving through The Dalles, we noticed the spire of the church. Fortunately, it was open and a volunteer was delighted to show us details of this historic building. There are four splendid stained glass window panels that were featured in National Geographic, beautiful Italian marble, a pressed tin ceiling, original pews and a statue of the Madonna that was carved from the keel of a sailing ship that sank near San Francisco in the 1850s. Stop to look at the rooster weathervane atop the spire. Old St. Peter's is no longer used for services but concerts and special programs are held there occasionally. Admission and parking are free. Donations are apprecialed.

We got side tracked looking at the sights on our drive so we weren't able to go inside because it was closed but it was a beautiful elegant building that we viewed from the outside.

We didn't arrive there when the church was open, so we didn't get a chance to see the insides. The outsides were quite nice. There was even a metal rooster on the top of the church. There was a parking lot right across the street, so the parking was good.

This is now an old church that is used for community events. The decor is original and beautiful for a once small town Catholic Church. Worth a peek.

We really loved our visit to this old Catholic Church. The work that went into the restoration of the stained glass windows, marble alter, wooden pews, and priest's room was amazing. We were given a personal tour by an extremely knowledgeable woman whose husband had done a lot of the work. She made it so interesting, even for my preteens. I think she said it is open year-round except January from 11 am - 3 pm.

What a special experience this old church is. I had the place to myself...and had a private tour from the volunteer there. The stained glass windows, the Italian marble, the old organs...oh and the collection of holy water fonts & rosaries from all over the world donated by a couple was something you'll likely only see once in your lifetime. THE best part was when he let me pull the rope to ring the old church bell! Thank you, my friend...you made my day.

Wonderful looking historic building. We would have enjoyed attending a service but they didn't begin until 1:00 PM. We couldn't wait that long.

You'll think you just stepped into a Roman church. It's small but is so beautiful. Don't miss it!! I loved seeing the marble piece at the alter and the stain glass is breathtaking. I'm so glad the people saved it from destruction.

Just a wonder bit of architecture, and a great story behind it.. Much thanks to the people that keep it that way...

It's more than average, I am sure, but we couldn't get inside. Very pretty landmark. Shocking townspeople would want to tear it down.

This is a beautiful place, saved from demolition in the 1970s. There are original statues of the saints and one of the Virgin Mary carved from the keel of a sailing ship.Lovely Italian carrara marble altar, pressed tin ceilings a six foot rooster weathervane on top of the steeple. Wonderful place. Handicapped accesible, too, with one of those chairs that climbs up the wall. The docents are nice, too.

This beautiful old building is over 100 years old. Wonderful stained glass and marble. Worth the stop.
