This is a brilliant museum definately not stuffy or boring lots of hands on things to do. The kids can dress up and draw and play and do activities and the adults can enjoy the history and play a game of croquet in funny hats like we did! We had a ball. If you come to York please give it a go its so cheap to be admitted and you learn lots about York and the kids will have fun too

Enjoyed the tour and the greeting of the staff. As committee members of our home historical society it was interesting to compare the two museums.

Very educational and informative for young kids to give a sense of history. Some of the item can be touched by children which was unique for a museum. Very well kept and maintained

This mall museum takes a user friendly look at the early history of York, the last stop for prospectors on the way to the gold fields.Photos of local identities, items for everyday use, anecdotes about local characters all make it an interesting hour or two. When we left we almost felt as if we had kknown these people. The story that caught my imagination most was the story of the two Chinese brothers who migrated to York at the turn of the twentieth century and leaving the gold for the others set up a market garden that fed the people for over eighty years. They were highly respected in the town and often left a basket of vegetables on the doorstep of people they knoew who were doing it hard. When the brothers were 102 and 98 respectively the local people fund raised to pay their air fares so that they could return to their home town in China. They went, saw and returned to live another couple of years in the town across the world that they had adopted as their own.I liked this museum.

We visited the Residency Museum with our 7 year old son. The exhibitions were very interesting and gave a lot of information about York and the original settlement. What makes this place value for money and a must for families are the many interactive activities that both adults and children can enjoy. Our son enjoyed ringing the old bell, trying on costumes from the period and using many of the artefacts on display. We spent a good hour and a half at the museum and for $8 for adults and $4 for children it really was good value for money. We have visited many museums around the world which are much bigger and more extravagant, but this really caught our attention. With lots of business closing down in York, it is vital we help support this kind of enterprise as we are gong to lose something special that links the present with the past.

The Museum is full of lively, colorful new exhibitions. It was very interesting to learn about the history of York and was even more interesting to feel a spiritual presence within the museum, in particular one of the bedrooms. Check it out for yourself.

Great artifacts and more importantly a wonderful exposition of the history of York starting with the ancient story of the Aboriginal people through to the the earliest settlers, the convict period, and the population expansion after the discovery of gold deposits farther north.

Amazing amount of work put together well and staffed by dedicated volunteers. A must see for anyone interested in local history.

Great pictures and story boards about the early settlers and convicts. Fascinating. Enthusiastic staff.
