Wild and unspoilt beach that is not good for swimming though surfing is popular her. With a permanent lifeguard post (for the summer) this is for experienced surfers only. Great walks in the area.

Beautiful stretch of beach, but not really for swimming. Cave is amazing as well as sand dunes. Easily accessible.

This is a review on Lake Wainamu not Bethells BeachThis lake is on Bethells Road before you get to Bethells beach, there is a large car park there. signposts are good.takes about 30mins walking from the carpark to the lake, highly recommend to take the route via the stream rather than via the sand dunes (the sand gets very hot during the day). The sand dunes are high and can be steep, great for sand boarding. The water is very calm unlike most beaches in West Auckland, the scenaries at the lake is just impressive. The lake can be a little crowded during public holiday. There are waterfalls and swimming holes on the other side of the lake, they are a bit more remote, but I do think its worth walk there, alot less crowded and the scenaries are just great.I DO NOT recommend walking there using the route on the southern side of the lake (when you arrive facing the lake, the route on your right hand side), the terrains are very difficult and can easily take over 2 hours 1 way.The route on the northern side of the lake are way easier, about 45-30 mins walk 1 way.Make sure you take food and water with you, from memory there are no shops and restaurant close by.Getting there without your own transports can be difficult, there are no public transport going there as far as I know. quicker to drive there from Henderson rather than from Titirangi.

Our favourite spot at Bethells is over the sand dune to O'neills bay very picturesque. You need the tide to be out a bit to get there though. Walk the other way and there are cool caves to explore lower tides are better for that too. Don't forget to wear your jandals on a hot day as the black sand burns your feet!!

Great area to walk in. Bethells is part of the Hillary Trail and walkers can walk through from Arataki in Titrangi. The cliff view near Goldies Bush are fantastic. The beach is a great place to relax and cool off. Surf life guards are present during the weekends and over the holiday period.

If you like west coast beaches with black sand and which can be pretty wild, this is your pick. It is a lovely drive over the Waitakere ranges to get to Bethells Beach and once you have arrived, there is a never ending length of beach to enjoy. Just before the beach itself is a lovely walk around Lake Wainamu which is an easy circular walk. Love this part of Auckland.

Great beach to visit if you like to go to a wild and beautiful beach. It has cafes there. You will need a car to get there

Bethells Beach is less than an hour's drive from the centre of Auckland on New Zealand's west coast, and is between the more well known (and more crowded) Piha and Murawai Beaches. I took a couple of loved ones there yesterday as they are traveling around New Zealand. They had actually been here before but had fogotten the name and were glad to be here again as they loved the beach. The best part of Bethells Beach is actually O'Neill's Bay which is reached by heading north from Bethells Beach by crossing the little stream and walking past the next bay and over the sand hill. This is about a 10 minute walk and the view of O'Neills Bay that greets you is well worth it. Take care in the water at O'Neills Bay as life guards are not on duty here. If you want to swim where there are lifeguards you are best to stay on Bethells Beach and ensure you swim between the flags. However, if you want almost total seclusion O'Neills Bay may be more to your liking. Remember to pack bottled water and sunscreen as there are no facilities on the beach, though the car park does have toilets, showers and, in summer, a caravan with food on some days. Well worth doing. Highly recommended.

Had a great walk on the beach with family over Xmas. First time at the beach. Found it very peaceful and beautiful scenery. A bit of a walk from the car park but few people on the beach late afternoon. We are very spoilt with beaches in NZ and are always able to find a quiet calm one free of crowds

Bethells beach is well worth a visit for the day. It's kid and dog friendly and beautiful to see. It's also huge, so there's plenty of space. The area where you can swim is limited because of the high surf, but there is an inlet where water collects and kids can play safely, so that's not an issue. We loved it.

We spent a couple of nights here Its rudimentary but nevertheless a great spot Marvellous views of the beach and very clean

We went there two weeks back. It was a one day family trip with 9 old young. The beach has beautiful view all over. The sand is very hot so keep your jandals on till get in the water. Apply heaps of sunscreen. The car park was full so we had to park a little distance far from the entrance. The best part of beach is that it has a small pond/water stream which is not deep at all that makes it safe for young kids to play in it. Parent supervision always recommended. Plenty of space for beach tents.Don't forget to carry your surfing boards. NOTE-No phone signals. We had to drive 15 mins away from beach to get phone signals.

No shops or crowds , plenty of beach to get away from anyone else there. O'neills beach is even less crowded , a few hundred metres walk north. Iron sand so very hot in summer and both beaches are very dangerous so beware - I prefer to go in winter as it's very scenic and not many people . Check out the Cascades kauri park on the way out to Bethels , 20-30 minute walk with some big kauris and nice creeks
