This winery has very pleasant surroundings and would make a relaxing and enjoyable place for lunch. We were there to look at the wines because this vineyard has a fairly famous history, the wines having been selected for a number of major state functions many years ago. The original owner sounds like a classic "can do" New Zealander who left his mark, so we were hoping that history was being repeated. It was!! Some fabulous white wines here especially the Chardonnay, Gewurz and an Albarinho. The latter was remarkable with piercing fruit delivery and fresh acidity. The lady proprietress is a gem, knowledgeable and humble. Make the effort if you are interested in varietal wines.

My husband and I spent a very pleasant afternoon sharing a delicious platter while tasting wine and listening to live music on the lawn.Beautiful relaxed setting. Plenty of room for the children to run around. One group was even playing some backyard cricket! Picnic blankets are also supplied to those who would prefer to sit on the lawn.Perfect!

My boyfriend and I went to this winery on our first day in gisborne. The wine was amazing but the service and staff even better. The owner was super friendly and even recommended another local winery for us to visit. We would highly recommend anyone to stop here. Our favs were the Pinot rose and the Malbec...they were too die for.

The location, surroundings, staff and music are lovely, and so were the platters we ordered. What we were disappointed with was the price of the tasting and the bottles of wine. After visiting Milton and Stonebridge ( free tasting and wine to purchase from $20) and Bushmere ( price of tasting taken of purchase, from again about $20) the $15 for tasting and only $5 off the only price of $43 made it an expensive afternoon when you are on a budget. The platters have remained the same price for the last few years, why is there not a more economical alternative for the wine?

My partner & I stopped here for a wine tasting & lunch. Beautiful setting. You can chose how you want your wine, we chose a tasting platter of 5 wines. They don't really go through the wines but give you in depth tasting notes. We ordered a platter for 2 to share & it was awesome. Also a very friendly dog that tries to make friends with you if you have food to share.

Having been on a few wine trails with typically nausiating wine experts, Matawhero provided a different experience. We ordered 2 racks with five glasses to share, which came with an accompanying notes about each wine in order. Great wine and no wine snob!

Off the main road in a rustic building; great ambiance, and fine wines.

What a wonderful setting. We enjoyed a lovely bottle of Viognier which was recommended to us as we wanted to try something other than our favourite sav. We had a cheese platter which was perfect. Even though the sole member of staff was in a bit of a busy patch, he remained friendly and down to earth, thanks for recommending the wine. We are moving to the area soon and will definitely be back.

Not being a wine drinker vineyeards don't hold that much appeal but Matawhero is DIVINE - the setting, the food, the service. Not too stuffy so you feel scared to bring kids - they can run around and play petanque but still a really quality offering. Would thoroughly recommend!

Free concert and good wine and food in vineyard setting. A super summer do!

Our second favorite vineyard in Gisborne! Great Pino Gris and the cheese plate with the 2 different chutneys were off the hook!
