Swing bridge? Actually more of a turn or spin bridge. Mounted on wheels that turn on a large round pad under the bridge, this bridge turns 90 degrees to allow boats to pass. Rare in that it is man powered, supposedly taking a minimum of 4 men to turn it. Our cabby drove over this bridge, but said he could not stop as he claimed there was a $400 fine for blocking the bridge and there is no where to pull over. We later walked across when sightseeing. It is a nice view of Haulover Creek which it crosses. You can see the boats lined up and tied off waiting to pass. Unless you are there overnight you probably won't see the bridge in operation. It is only turned twice a day in the early morning and late evening, so if you are on a cruise ship you won't be around. It was an interesting spot to view and photograph.

It's a shame that the Swing Bridge at San Ignacio Town, Belize, is in such an unkept place. Locals use this bridge to travel from the Bullet Tree area into town. The community needs to establish some type of trash pick up system at this point, as there is more trash (paper plates mostly) at this site than at most of the other unkept parts of San Ignacio. The swing bridge is a long cable-supported wooden bridge that spans across the river. It's fun and daring to walk across, but the trash around the bridge takes away from what could be a really nice site for locals and visitors.

We didn't stop at the bridge for the bridge but for Carmelita's swing bridge bar, a great local spot with bell in beer and a friendly atmosphere local and full of life I loved the local flavor and the great atmosphere Roberto welcomed us and looked after U.S. it's worth going away from the tourist track and stepping out to experience the local customs and people this was a great stop and worth the walk

While it was interesting to see the bridge and the busy car and bike traffic in the city we were told the bridge isn't opened more than twice a day, early morning and evening.

Nice enough bridge but unless you can time your visit to when they are opening it up, you are really missing the event.

My husband and I book the Calypso TrainTour as part of our excursion in Belize. The Swing Bridge is a nice photo op if you can get the entire bridge when crossing it. We could not. But nevertheless it is a nice historical landmark. Although not operational today, it is open to local pedestrians and vehicles. It is not what I expected. In fact when our guide stated that we were crossing the only swing bridge in America, we missed it. As we crossed the canal and went back then we realized that it was that small bridge we went over. The bridge was constructed in 1922 Liverpool, England and brought to Belize by a company in the US from New Orleans. The installation was completed in 1923. When installation was completed in 1923, it allowed boat traffic to bring supplies and services to the city. It was manually opened by four men cranking by hand once in the morning and once at night. What a history lesson!

This was a blast. If you are afraid of heights, especially while walking, stay clear, but if you like doing the out of ordinary type thing, go for it!

Went walked here a few times over our stay in Belize City and didn't see the fuss - but to be fair we didn't get the full history of the bridge and it's significance. There is a must-see shop next to it on the DT side called Drums Not Guns with a sweet man who promotes non-violence with the local children and teens. His theory is to battle it out on the drum instead of the streets - teaching kids about discipline. Also a good food-truck that's sometimes parked outside the water taxi terminal called Paniscea - bright green!

A must see if in Belize City. In a rough part of town but worth the effort. I felt safe walking around town during the day but might think twice doing it after dark.

Swing bridge is not in use, but our guide, Louigi, provided the history while we were on our way to lunch nearby.

If you take the water taxi to or from Belize City, you'll be right next to the swing bridge. It's on the canal, right behind the CC water taxi. It's worth a picture. It's not really a site that one goes out of their way to visit, but it is right there. You can drive or walk across it.

The Belize Swing Bridge is a great tourist attraction and historical land mark of Belize. It is the oldest and one of the few manually operated and functional swing bridge in Central America. The view is breathtakingly refreshing because there are sail boats that lines the Belize river also while standing on the east side of the bridge you can peer into the Caribbean sea!
