This museum has a good collection of Chinese art and memorabilia. Most of it is wheel chair accessible, but due to the fact that the Chinese superstitions have historically lead to door sills being high and the fact that there is an up stairs area in one of the buildings. Some parts may not be as accessible. When you go into the temple section you will smell the incense. This is due to the fact that this is an actual working temple. Several religions are practiced here. There is a self tour, but if you get a chance to take a tour from a docent you will get some really interesting facts.

Stephan's review isn't valid--the temple doesn't reveal itself when you just drive by. This is one of the largest, if not THE largest intact Gold-Rush era Chinese Temple Complexes in California. The temple is filled with period artifacts that have been there since the 1840s. In addition, there is a recreation of the Fong Lee herb shop & gold buying business using original furnishings from the Fong Lee store. BTW, Fong Lee is not a name, but the store's title: Big Profit--as to whose profit, we don't know, the shopper or the storekeeper's!The tapestry and costume collections are wonderful, but the most amazing thing is that much that is on display has been in use at the temple since the Gold Rush days.

Ancient artifacts, beautiful building and temple, giant bamboo. Pieces from the Imperial Palace, the oldest Chinese temple in the US. A must see if you're visiting Oroville.

The Oroville Chinese temple is still functional, not just an interesting bit of history. There was a substantial Chinese population in Oroville, once the largest Chinese population outside of China, and the temple was a center of that community. Downtown Oroville has extensive tunnels under the streets placed by, according to local legend, Chinese who were searching or gold. A visit to the temple should also include a quick trip to the Chinese cemetery on Feather River Blvd. The graves in the cemetery held bodies of the deceased for a year and a day after which the bodies were disinterred and sent back to China for a proper funeral. Just drove by the temple and were unimpressed? I'm truly sorry to hear that. You missed a key part of Chinese history in Califirnia.

According guidebook one of the touristic attraction. Well we just drove by - nothing special. It's not really worth the time

This was a real unusual find and not expected. It is in a residential area, opposite what I can only describe as a levy. The only reason I paid a visit was because of the knowledge of a local resident and friend. There were so many Chinese living in the area due to the gold rush and railway construction that the Chinese Emperor at the time paid for the Temple to be built. He was not really that philanthropic, he also provided the town with a Tax collector for his own coffers !Sadly, the Feather River flooded in the late 19th century and killed many of the Chinese residence of Oroville. The temple contains a garden area and the attached building some lion costumes.

If you visit the Oroville area, this is just one of many unique attractions. Follow the green line to see all the others.

I've taken international students here for tours but have also taken out-of-town friends. It's often much cooler there in summer because of the brick walls and shaded patio. They also have a lovely koi pond.

The temple is full of exhibits including clothing and artifacts of the beginning of Chinese settlement in the area.

The wifey and I went their with our kiddos yesterday, its a $3 dollar charge for anyone over 12... okay, I paid it no problem. This place was small and dusty, smelled like decaying flesh and the woman who ran the "attraction" was so rude! yes we had a total of 5 children with us, but we didnt need you up in our business making rude comments when ever you saw fit about our children. Yes they have some issues, learn to deal with it. NOT to point it out by saying it outloud, Oh well these kids just have issues. NO SH*T! My family and I will not be going back there.

This is an unusual museum with a glimpse into Oroville's more interesting past. I can't recommend Oroville as a destination now, but if you find that you need respite from a drive on the way somewhere else, I highly recommend stopping by.

We were extremely pleased with the way the Temple has be kept up thru the years and the history was just awesome not only for the grandchildren to read about but for the adults.

We accidentally discovered this temple and museum in Oroville while driving down the 70 from Chico. It is a little hidden gem with a Temple, a museum of local Chinese immigrant history and a small garden. There is an excellent display of Chinese puppets and fabrics that children would love and it is small enough to avoid them getting bored. There is also a nice walk along the river bank outside the museum.(Other great Chinese historical places are the Temples in Waverly Street, San Francisco, and the town of Locke on the American River).
