Up on the hills around Rome, it is a common place to visit by locals. Especially during spring, summer and fall for its magnificent view and its food specialty: wild strawberries. I don't know if they are really wild, but they are exquisite: very small and tasty, no comparison with what you find in groceries. Down close to the lake there is a museum were there were on display ancient Roman wooden ships, used to re-enact sea battles in the lake at Emperors' times. For God knows what reason, they were put on fire by retreating German troops in WWII. After tens of years, hopefully they should now be restored (I'm not sure) and available to visit.

Lake Nemi is one of my favorite spots and is truly a magical place to visit. It is a crater lake surrounds by beautiful countryside and near the wonderful village of Nemi with small shops, great restaurants and the small strwberries that Nemi is known for (make sure you try the Fragolino liquor).

Lovely quaint little hillside town, with many restaurants and small local shops. Quite hilly but well worth it for the views.

Lago di Nemi is absolutely beautiful and its surrounding towns are so charming. I would definitely recommend the trip if you're nearby!

A quiet oasis. The museum (Museo delle Navi Romani) of artifacts from the 1st and 2nd century AD was great and amazingly quiet and unknown (Entrance fee 6 euro). Lake Nemi itself (free of charge), which is sacred to the goddess Diana and is called "Diana's Mirror", is placid and quiet. No motor boats, very few access points (it is mostly surrounded by well-guarded private properties). We felt blessed to be there and it was the perfect escape from the intensity of the city of Rome. We did not go to the town, because we were tired of tourist areas, just hiked at the lake itself and contemplated its serenity as a pagan site of goddess worship. The excellent museum had clean bathroom facilities, and we ate a lovely lunch at a little restaurant overlooking the lake (right near the museum).

Our son arrived from North America a few days ago with a list of "must do's off the beaten path", so we called Lake Nemi up on the GPS and headed out .... only a short distance from Roma, this tiny town, best known for its Strawberry Festival is a beautiful breath of fresh air. So picturesque and peaceful, this tiny town nestled into the hills provides an absolutely gorgeous view of the of Lake Nemi. We stopped and had a traditional pizza and wine lunch overlooking the lake, capped off with a delicious wild strawberry tart for dessert ... and headed home. Perfect little day trip!

If you are visiting the Castelli area outside Rome (Castel Gandolfo, Frascati, Grottaferatta, Roca di Papa etc) don't miss Nemi, a tiny jewel of an Italian village, very popular with Romans, Italians in general, and of course, tourists. Famous for it's Strawberry festival, there are many derivatives: liqueurs, pies, cakes - and delicious tiny, wild strawberries. Sit outside in a bar overlooking the lake and enjoy one of their 3 sizes of strawberry and custard tarts with a cappuccino. There are also a number of small, cosy restaurants serving pasta with interesting Funghi Porcini and game sauces, produce being from the surrounding area. Several hikes down to the peaceful deep blue lake, surrounded by forest will enhance your appetite.

It's an interesting stop if you're heading towards Lago Albano. The woods around the town are very pretty and it's nice to be in a small town so close to Rome. The wood strawberries were a big item in a number of the shops, but watch for the variable price (3-5 Euro) for a tiny package.

An unexpected and unspoiled beauty just a few miles from Rome. Enjoy the silence, the smell of the fig trees and the forest all around this flawless gem
