very good by day, but check it out at night- totally different the way the light catches different aspects of the statue

The statute of David is a wonderful piece of art. The detail that was put into the sculpture is amazing. There are also many other sculptures, paintings and musical instruments that are also on display dating back to the early years of 1300.

if you are going to the Piazza Della Signora you best be sure you see all the amazing artwork that is there. There is also a medusa statue. They are all masterpieces!

We visited Piazza Della Signoria in November. As a student of Italian Culture and visitor this was a dream for me. Beautify and grizzly at the same time. A must if you visit Florence ( straight down from the Cathedral).

Cellini's Perseus with the head of Medusa stands outside in Piazza della Signoria and it is absolutely astonishing. I recommend visiting at both night and day to get two different views of what is a wonderful work of art. Bring more than an iPhone to take photos, because this was one of the few things that my phone had an issue capturing while on our trip. The stronger the camera, the better. It is immensely detailed.

There are a lot of sculptures under the Loggia del Lanzi in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence but this is the one most people write home about because it truly is a bit grisly - The beautiful Perseus is holding up Medusa's just decapitated head for our inspection and the blood is still flowing copiously - but most people are still captivated by the elegant body of her slayer. The story of how this bronze was made and the damage to Benvenuto Cellini's home in the process is really funny and can be found , written in his own distressed words in his Autobiography - a Penguin Classic - easy to find in Florentine bookshops or online. Once you read that you will enjoy the sculpture a whole lot more!

Just in front of the Uffizzi, there are a series of sculptures mostly commissioned by the Medici family. The Perseus is stunning in its simplicity yet ability to portray such intense emotions. Worth going to see.

Because of rhe way the statue is positioned in the loggia, it is difficult to see much of the detail unaided. Spend some time reading about the sculpture in advance. It's an interesting story. Excellent photos http://www.piazza-signoria.com/sculptures-of-piazza-signoria/perseus-medusa-cellini.html#.VLG94CvF9aA

I've loved this statue since I first visited Florence more than thirty years ago. In my view, it's better than any of its Florentine rivals by Michelangelo and Donatello. It's worth reading about it in Benvenuto Cellini's autobiography either before or after you see it.

While the statue of Perseus is here and is wonderful on its own, there are probably a dozen other statues here that are a must see.

Magnificant! I wanted to include this sculpture on my Christmas Card, but there were just 13 pictures, and I could not include the entire scrupture. This is 5 star and a must see!

Astonishing sculpture. The more you know about bronze the more amazing it is. It is sort of lost waaay up high on the pedestal in the loggia, but that adds to it's power too.

This area consists of more than ten statues. Perseus and Medusa are great but take the time to read about the others as well. The copy of Michaelangelo's David is next to this group.
