This museum proved to be very interesting. The staff were on each level trying to help us understand what we were seeing, to supplement the audio guide. Particularly helpful was the man in the Roman section who went out of his way to explain some of the displays.
While the Historisches Museum was interesting, Since the English guided tour only had a few segments, we wandered around seeing fascinating things but had no idea what we were looking at or the historical significance. I do wish I knew German better and I am working on it but my son was pretty disappointed.
Beautiful museum, the history of Regensburg is quote interesting, starting with the Romans, great displays. Well worth the visit but having the description only in German and nothing for the English speaking visitors was a little disappointing.
This is a world class museum with an excellent exhibition depicting the history of Regensburg. The Roman history of the city is particularly well portrayed. Have a look at the models of the city as well as a model of Stone Bridge. Its however a shame that the curators did not provide more descriptions in English . Maybe a pamphlet in English. But certainly worth your EUR 5 entrance fee.
If you want to learn something about Regensburg's history, this is the first place you should visit. You can also have great time at Cafe, even you can have breakfast
This museum was one of the best I've been to. The collection of artefacts and paintings was not only pretty comprehensive for the region, but brilliantly displayed. I really would have appreciated captions in English as I rather struggle with German, but this is of small moment overall. The food at the museum café was excellent too, enabling us to spent THE ENTIRE DAY at the museum - and then we didn't do justice to it all.
Frommers recommended this museum, and I am very glad I stopped in. Don't know if it's free every Sunday, but it was yesterday ! Many many displays of Celtic and Roman artifacts, well displyed. Even with my rudimentary German, I was able to piece together alot of the fascinating, and very long history of this beautiful city. It was even more meaningful because I had done a self-guided walking tour and then seeing the items that had been rescued and put on display gave me chills ! ANd then crossing the street and looking at a large hole they are excavating really made me imagine what they would find from 2500 years of habitiation. Wish my German was better, or that I could have bought a book in English to learn more about the history. Google searched just don't go deep enough !
this museum might be interesting, but we were distracted by the irritable museum attendants who followed us around and scolded our children at every opportunity. I wouldn´t go back or recommend to anyone really
this church is today an impressiv museum, witness of many hundred years and many, many visitors. We enjoyed the wonderfull musik of the organ
After reading the last review we came here an hour before closing. It was far larger than we had expected and very interesting but it is on more than one floor and it's not obvious that you have to continue upstairs so to our regret we missed a lot of it. Liked the interior of a Roman villa and some fantastic medieval tapestries and wall painting designs and beautifully detailed models eg of Romans building a part of the city you can still see today. The cafe also looked nice. The musem isn't publicised much but it was one of the highlights of our stay. Full of lovely things.
Housed in a converted monastery, the Historical Museum is a nice small museum with many interesting artifacts from this ancient city. The museum takes you through different periods in the city's history from the Roman era through the medieval ages and beyond. There is a large model of the city that you can view and also an art gallery on the second level with some neat old gravestones. If you don't speak German I highly recommend getting the English audio tour to go along with your visit since the signs are all in German. Nice way to spend an hour or two on a rainy day!
