The treaty of the Peace of Augsburg signed in 1555 allowed the co-existence of Catholicism and Protestantism on the same sacred ground. Named after the patron saints of Augsburg, St. Ulrich and St. Afra was originally a Catholic basilica of late Gothic architecture with Renaissance tower and onion dome. After the treaty St. Afra remains as a Catholic church and St. Ulrich became a Lutheran church. I only visited St. Afra Church where the Fugger's family members were buried in the memorial chapels they donated. The interiors are decorated with sculptures and painted panels. The chancel has a high altar along with two altars on both sides, choirs with framed artworks by famous painters, significantly indicate this is a Catholic chancel. Opposite is the organ piece with two painted shutters. The crypt holds the tombs of St.Ulrich and St. Afra. The Shrine keeps the bones of St.Ulrich. This the church where two denominations of faith share the peace to worship and to embrace the glory of the God .

The old church is dedicated to St Afra who was a Roman virgin. The Lutheran church is dedicated to St Ulrich and is much plainer though very attractive . The old church has three wonderful carved altars which are very large. Both saints are buried in the crypt.

We were fascinated by these two churches - catholic and protestant - side by side. Very different inside but both full of peace. Well worth a visit.

We visited these two churches in our quest to find a destination for Mass on Palm Sunday. Very pretty!

Have toured at least two hundred churches or temples across Europe and Asia. This church not as grand as some nor as awe inspiring. What makes this a gem is the wrought iron work found throughout as well as the intricate carvings on the pews.

Perhaps not big as The Cathedral of Augsburg but also stunning and interesting. Founded in 10th century as the abbey of St. Ulrich and St. Afra, meantime served as millitary hospital and cavalry barracks. Inside, three really nice interiors, at the sides of the brilliant ornaments. At the front door, beautyful portal.

A beautiful church with stunning wrought iron work and lovely stained glass windows. Well worth a visit.

Built in 1503 the church is absolutely magnificent and in amazing condition. Definitely worth looking in to.

This mammoth cathedral is full of impressive wrought-ironwork and intricate woodwork. It's at the far end of Maximilianstrasse from the Rathaus and there are several other attractions are along the way.

Bavaria is full of Baroque, Rococo and Renaissance style of church, this is one of them and its always worth to visit since many history we can learn from all the ornament they created.

Another beautiful church not to be missed! This one is quite stunning!

All three patron saints of Augsburg are buried here: St. Afra, St. Ulrich, and St. Simpert. Make sure to check out Saint Simpert's Chapel (which is always open) and go down to the crypt for the other two. If there is one church you see in Augsburg, I'd choose this over the cathedral!

I was in the military at Reese Kaserne 70-72. I would visit the Church very frequently. I thought it was the most beautiful Church I had ever seen. I re-visited Germany in 2007. I went back to St Ulrich. It was still the same. Enjoyed it very much.
