I had the chance to visit this park for two days and "impressive" is the word that summarize my feelings about this place. The park is beautiful. You can see the wonderful "Araucaria", which is a sacred tree by mapuche's culture, and it's a specie which had lived in the earth since the Dinosaurs's era. I recommed to walk through the path to "Sierra Nevada's Viewpoint". There, you'll be able to see a spectacular view of the park. The roads inside the park are relatively good (it's depend on the season). If you go just for the day, it's better to bring your meals because there aren't any store to buy food.

I would definitely get a 4 wheel drive if you are planning to drive through the park. The road is not good, especially in the north part where it can be slippery and steep. We spent a (wet) day driving through the park and doing a short but interesting walk by the ranger lodge in the centre of the park. The park is a great place to see Monkey puzzle trees. The road through the park takes you through volcanic areas as well as lush forest. You can see where the volcano stopped and created lakes. There is another short walk at the southern end of the park, just by the ranger station at the entrance, to see a waterfall and cliffs that show the historical volcanic activity. There are cabins to rent in the park but we just did a day trip.

Hi folks!I'd like to share a couple of pics form this unique trip to thoe south of Chile.Parque Nacional conguillio is near the city of Melipeuco, some 11 hrs from the capital Santiago by bus.The part is a paradise for hikkers, and offers some astonishing scenary. It offers several accomodations, all of them very cozy and country styled, as well as some enthical and rural tourism options.Best months in the year range from septembrer to may, May being the entry point for the fall colors, and the time of the year I made my trip.Hope you enjoy the pics!

This parque had a bit of everything. Severe volcanic landscapes, beautiful greenery, a hypnotic lake that absolutely transfixed, a marvelously fun snaking road for the rental car, a majestic striped canyon with a powerful waterfall, and presiding over it all like a snow-crowned king, the Llaima Volcano.

I went on a day trip to Conguillio NP from Curacautin with my rental car and greatly enjoyed it. The landscape is truly breathtaking : araucaria forests, lava fields, lakes, and of course the majestic Llaima volcano in the middle of it all. The hike I did - Sierra Nevada, 4 hours roundtrip - was one of the best I ever did, with majestic views of the park.My only gripe would be with the 'road' through the park. The owner of my hotel told me it was passable with my economy rental car (B-category) and indeed it was, but only barely so. The stretch between Laguna Captren and Logo Conguillio is incredibly steep, narrow, with plenty of loose rock, requiring nerves of steel in a regular car. So if you get your own transport (recommended), get a car with high clearance. A 2wd pickup truck would be ideal.

The Conguillio National Park is really a highlight with four large volcanoes and an enormous amount of stages of natural vegetation development after big erruptions. It is an absolute must to understand how landscape evolution works. Also, the Araucaria-Nothofagus forests are super interesting, very old, teaching you how forest growth under extreme climate conditions works. Another highlight are the different lagunas with colors from almost black to green and blue. It is recommendable to have a car to access the different highlights. Hiking is great, but the park is so large that you should then spend really one to two weeks.

The park has different access roads. We went through the one from Melipeuco. The view of the Volcano (Llaima) is amazing, you have to approach the park going through a road that crossses the magma river (don't expect burning magma, there are volcanic rocks and sand). The amazing thing is how big this "river" is! you can imagine how powerful the eruptions of this volcano are (yes, it's still active).Once you arrive to the park you will be crossing Araucaria forests and you can almost imagine that a dinosauris gonna cross the road, the landscape is jurasic! Along with the Araucarias are Coigues, tall and massive trees typical from Chile and Argentina. There are several trails in the park, some of them very easy and family friendly. While doing the trails you will heard different birds singing and the woodpeckers, and if you are alucky you can see a fox. There is nice trail if you are going with kids, it's no more than 2 hours and you get to the "Araucaria Madre" (Mother Araucaria), a massive very old tree (1.800 years old aprox). The place is great for both day visits and camping (good facilities). There are several lagoons (some of them with amazing emerald color) and lakes, in some of them you can swim.
