A great set up with a number of ponds stocking selective size fish, plenty of grass area and picnic tables so you can have a picnic lunch if you wish with a BBQ onsite. Fishing rods and bait provided if you wish and you pay for what you catch. They can also clean your fish for you. They also sell smoked fish that we mainly go there for. Friendly staff and a nice relaxing atmosphere great for couples and families well worth a visit.
I had a great time with my parents and daughters at the farm today, which was well worth the pleasant and scenic drive from Melbourne. The people were super friendly, and the fish you catch are reasonably priced. We used the free bbq and cooked one of the fish and had the rest packed in ice. The smoked trout that can be purchased from the shop was delicious. It you crave fresh fish, a bit of fun quality time with family, and a bbq, then this is the place for you. On the way home we stopped for a home made ice-cream near Coles in Healesville...a perfect end to a great day.
My family had been here several times. We come here for fresh trout and salmon. Pricing is comparable to ordinary fish market. But it's great to know the fish you get is as fresh as it gets. We would normally bring a picnic basket with everything we need including seasoning and utensils. The farm provide the BBQ facility. We give the kids a quota of how many fish to catch each. Like, X1 for us to eat for lunch, X2 to take home and X2 for grandparents back in Melbourne. This way we do not end up with grumpy kids wanting to fish more than what we would like to take. We bring our own ice and esky. But they also sell some there. We would normally go to the farm as a lunch break before or after sight seeing around the area for other spots and wineries. Staff are always kind and friendly. Their smoked trouts are also really beatiful.
Hi BeeKay44,Thank you so much for your positive feedback, really glad you enjoy the new shop and BBQ facilities! Hope to see you again in the New YearBest Fishes,Buxton Trout & Salmon Farm
We had a great afternoon at the fishing farm.My parents and kids were so excited when we caught fishes. Each rainbow trout is approx 900 grams.....A great afternoon to spend at this farm.
Hi "veryfussymummy" I'm sorry to hear you didn't have the great day out in our region that we would have liked. Thanks for your comments regarding the cooking of the trout, we've passed them on to the management of the local hotel and they are now introducing a range of new seasoning options for their guests. If you have time later in the holidays I'd like to invite you and your family back up to the farm as our guests for another fish, and either have lunch by the ponds in our redeveloped BBQ and picnic area or try the new menu options at the hotel and let us know what you think. You can contact me at buxtontrout@bigpond.com cheers, Mitch
We often stop here and buy trout they smoke themselves, absolutely beautiful, moist and lightly smoked. We haven't fished there as yet but it looks a great way to spend an afternoon and fantastic for the kids.
Always great for fresh trout caught before your eyes but now a much improved spot for a family picnic. Great facilities in a pretty peaceful location.
Great place to take kids. They can fish while you light the barbie. Trout and Salmon are available for sale from the shop and I can say the Salmon & Trout Mousse are excellent.A pleasant drive from Melbourne and I am sure you will have a great days outing at the farm and surrounding countryside.
Went there with my 3 children aged 3~8 years. They thoroughly enjoyed the day fishing on a very windy day. Seeing the smile on their face as they caught the fishing was very pleasing. The only problem we had was that we had planned to cook the fish on the BBQ so the children could enjoy their catch on site. The day was very windy and the BBQ were not sheltered at all.You could hardly get the fire going which was very disappointing. We spent so much time trying to cook even the sausages with little success. There were a lot of people in a similar situation who had their catch, got it cleaned and wrapped up for BBQ and were trying to get it cooked with little chance of even getting the fire going. I think although the BBQ area has a roof over, it should be sheltered under those circumstance. without the sheltering, the staff should inform guests and put signs up that the BBQ are not functional on the day so that people don't waste their time trying to get these machines going.
Took my wife and son to fish.Great staff running the place.Very friendly and helpful.Explained before we went in that what you catch must be paid for and no throwing back what you catch. very we'll laid out once you get in with several ponds telling you what is in each pond.My son caught 4 salmon but only landed two as one broke the hook and the other slipped off the hook one on land and wiggled back in to the pond. The friendly staff cleaned and filleted both fish. We stayed and had a picnic next to the ponds. All up it was a great day out.
Hi Michelle, Sorry you didn't have a good time at the farm. I would like to politely point out that you do have to pay for all the fish you catch at other trout farms, the only catch & release farms charge a much higher entry fee to cover the cost of the fish that die from being thrown back. This is exactly the reason why we are not a catch and release farm. We believe that it is cruel to continually catch and hurt the fish and throw them back. It also damages the fish for other customers. We understand that the price of fish can add up, which is why we have different sized ponds with the size and price per kilo clearly printed on them. An average plate size trout cost $6 - $8.
Very cheap to fish $5 & going prices for the fish (Salmon or Trout)you catch weigh & priced. They clean & put in ice for you to take away. Stay as long or short as you want. Guarantee you will catch a fish. Staff are helpful. good day out for adults & kids
Went to the trout farm and caught lots of fish. Lots of salmon and rainbow trout. Prices are reasonable and the staff are very helpful. There are free barbeque facilities if you want to cook your catch. The staff clean the fish for you for free and you can take the fish home with ice. We took our fish down the road to Buxton pub and had it cooked for us with chips and salad for $10 a fish, loved it!! Topped off a great day
This is so much fun, the entry fee is only $5 adults and cheaper for seniors and kids, you get fishing rod tackle Bait a bucket and heaps of fun catching the fish. You pay per kilo for what you catch before gutting. But so worth it!! Kids love it, adults squeal with delight at catching the squirming fish and check out is quick. The guys who run the place are chatty and well informed. Lots of fun!
