Took a boat trip to the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary with Prince Rupert Adventure Tours. The bear trips are timed to coincide with low tide, when the bears come to the shoreline looking for food under the rocks. The excursions usually run between May, when the bears emerge from hibernation and August when the bears move up river to catch the migrating salmon returning to their spawning grounds. The round trip takes around 6-7 hours, and a packed lunch is included. It takes a while to get to the sanctuary, but there's a lot of scenery to admire, and the crew were good at keeping you informed of the things that you see. Once you get to Khutzeymateen the approach is quite slow as you have to be quiet when approaching, some of the bears can be scared off by noise. We got to see some bears and also some bald eagles, and although we got fairly close a good pair of binoculars or a camera with a decent telephoto lens are useful. If you are visiting Prince Rupert and the bear trips are running then this is a good way to see bears in the wild.

This is the experience of a lifetime - highly recommended! We travelled on a catamaran with experienced, knowledgeable guides. We saw grizzly sows with cubs and harbour seals.

I did this a while back and the memories linger on - one of the best trips I have ever done. The boat is huge and well managed and all the clines behaved - they did not speak so we saw Grizzly bear.

Grizzly bears there are beautiful strong and healthy I extremely enjoyed viewing the bears grab salmon as a avid fisherman from terrace rupert is one of my favourite places to visit no just for the fish but for the chance to see something that many people couldn't even get a peak at it I get why this is #1 but there are other attractions ( North Pacific cannery ) that are very similar and deserve To get the amount of attention as the khutzeemateen sanctuary but this is highly recommended in my opinion

Loved this! 7 hour round trip on a comfortable boat with great staff. We saw 5 grizzlies, and they brought the boat in close enough to watch a mother grizzly and youngster eating sedge grass on the shore. One could hear them rip up the grass - quiet, beautiful - most interesting. Lots of local history provided too. They also slowed and stopped the boat when whales were spotted on the trip back. Saw lot of other wild life as well - great experience.

We must have seen 10 bears while on this excursion. Many mama and baby cubs. Seeing them in the wild is so special. They are very used to the boat, and never even lift their heads while the boat is approaching them. This is a great place to visit.

Prince Rupert Adventure Tours to the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary. Absolutely fantastic. Worth every penny. Captain and crew , first rate and very knowledgeable. Beautiful scenery, awesome boat ride. Managed to see 8 grizzlies, including mom and cub. One humpback whale and the eagle show at the end. Amazing trip. If you are planning a bucket list. This is a must. You will not be disappointed.

Amazing day trip sightseeing tour-worth every dollar. The staff was amazing, so friendly and informative. The scenery is amazing and the bear sightings were better than I ever expected. Saw 7 different grizzlies, a humpback whale, eagles and harbour seals. The lunch was simple but good, you can purchase snacks and drinks on board. Bring your camera and binoculars, you won't be disappointed!

The catamaran was custom built for this type of touring. Clean, large, comfy seats. Just cruising up the inside passage was a thrill, especially the Khutzeymateen Inlet; not many boats venture in there. The owner is adamant all tours will see grizzlies, and we did. He tries to get the boat as close as possible to shore for the best viewing. On the way, we saw seals, a little humpback whale (little early in the season to see a bunch), loads of eagles close up. Lunch is provided and all the snacks you want (at a cost), and of course the commentary of the area, native villages, etc. Highly recommend it!!

Absolutely amazing. This tour was worth every penny paid and I will do it again. We saw several bears and were able to get close enough to get some really great pictures. It's important to remember that this is their territory and we are intruders in their space so we must be respectful of it. Thanks to the team at Adventure Tours for an awesome trip.

you couldn't get off the ship and really see the bears. in other trips I have been on in other locations they have bear stands that allow to get up close to the bears while being safe and you can stay for several hours. Here we couldn't get close, only stayed a few minutes guess I have been spoiled. I was disappointed

If visiting Prince Rupert in late spring/early summer (May-July) and you are interested in viewing wildlife in a pristine unspoiled setting, a day trip to Khutzeymateen should be a priority. The setting is spectacular. Deep fjords with rainforest coming down to water's edge, glacier capped mountains towering in the background, and, if you are fortunate, grizzly bears along the shore and open meadows. Even if you don't see grizzly bears (we saw five, including mom with cub), the scenery rivals anything you might see in Norway or Alaska. Visit in May through mid-summer when the bears are out of hibernation. Later in summer through fall, you won't see bears since they have moved inland to feast on salmon in the interior streams, but a visit is still worthwhile for the scenery.

Went with the yellow catamaran called Inside Passage Great crew on the boat- informative and helpful. Very good on board facilities- nice clean loos, hot drinks and cold. sandwiches and snacks etc. Comfy seats and good viewing areas up top and out side when the boat stopped. We got to see 1 black bear and 7 grizzlies including 2 sets of mums and cubs. Boat gets up really close to them. on the way there and back saw other marine life and feeding the eagles at the end was something special. This is an expensive trip but worth every penny!
