The predominately Chinese run city of Sa Dec has the cleanest most organised day wet market I have ever seen. Everything from live snails, toads, fish, eels, prawns, all kept alive in plastic buckets using air bubble machines run off batteries like in a fish tank. It was uncomfortable to see skinned toads still alive but for the working women of Vietnam who are expected to run a business, look after children and possibly feed 4 generations this is fast food and who am I to judge. Some of the others were not so understanding. There were eggs of every size duck, chicken, quail ...fantastic. but sadly could not buy. As we were leaving I could see a well organised night market with food and art, clothes and all sorts of goodies lining the river front, unfortunately we had to get back on board our boat.

An incredible waterfront market, selling some VERY interesting food - snails, snakes, water beetles, crabs (all alive) as well as a huge variety of fruit and veg. No concessions to tourists (so no tourist tat). Very colourful - a great view of local life in the Mekong Delta.

While on a 6 day motorbike tour with myrides.vn we spend our last night on the road in Sa Dec. It was just by chance we arrived during a weekend that they have a night market. It runs parallel to the river and starts at the local produce market. Probably the most exciting market I've seen in Vietnam. It was like going back in time with the rustic charm of the old buildings. It's not a big tourist destination so people were very welcoming and greeted us with smiles and laughter everywhere we went. It's also a photographers paradise. It's the way I'd imagine Vietnam looked during the colonial days, but aged considerably. It made for some fantastic photo opportunities. Well worth the trip.

This Is Exactly What You Would Expect From A "Local Market" WOW!From strange fish, eel, and cleaned and ready for the barbie field rat meat, this place is a feast for the eyes and a curse to the nose! You would expect to see Anthony Boudain and Andrew Zimmer for that strange food eating show called "Bizarre Foods". TIP: Watch out for while walking. I found myself starring some much at all the truly weird foods I almost got hit by the scooters that they let in. People are shopping while on their scooters!

At this food market you got the chance to observe and learn some of the daily Vietnamese culture in Sa Dec. This is not a highly sanitized marked, but mirrors the real life and working environment where people have to go to to run their house and feed their family. There are no touristy stalls for souvenirs but lots of fruit, vegetable and herbs, fresh fish and meat, live chicken and ducks as well as home equipment on display. Part of the market is only for wholesale. Since this is a typical local marked and not geared towards tourist you might not be able to digest all the goodies you can buy here. Therefore be careful with what you eat and drink. Eat only what you can peel yourself. If you are able to take in the many different smells and enjoy being in contact with the locals, then this is the place to visit to learn and get acquainted with the local hard working Vietnamese people.

The market is real and raw, with pork, live chicken, fresh fishes, shrimps and other crustaceans, fruit and veg of many different types, skinned gutted rats, ducks and herbs. Then there is 6 types of rice all different colors, water lotus and hycynth ready to weaving, grains such as lotus seed, there is even lotus wine. This is a real locals market not some market designed for tourists, with that in mind I really don't suggest you buy anything to eat or drink from here. I tried the sugar cane drink ummm but next day I was so sick I have never vomited that much or like that ever. So look around take some snaps, talk to the locals and buy some wooden stands but don't buy anything to eat or drink from here. The traders house is excellent and very close to the market so check it out too.

You get to see everything and learn the daily culture of the people in Sa Dec. Everyone is friendly and happy to let you take photos of them, the market and the goods being sold. Safe and easy to walk around for 30 minutes and enjoy the scene.

This was a wonderful experience. We left the boat that we were on to visit this market and it was well worth it. It is not sanitized for the tourists but is a proper working environment selling all the things that would be required to run a house and feed a family. There were no gift stalls but plenty of fruit, vegetables, meat and fish on display. Part of the market was 24 hour wholesale where huge quantities of vegetables were being sold. If going to Sa Dec this is a must see!
