If you've bought the Pingyao Ancient City tourpass, then you'll get into this for free as part of your 120 RMB ticket. Near the east gate and the Confucious Temple, you can spend a good 30 minutes just wandering through. Wash your hands in the water fountains on the way in and then walk through each of the rooms, temples and courtyards. Don't miss climbing to the top and looking down on the roof tops from above and also the temple of wealth - which of course you can contribute towards by spending money in the souvenir and gift shop.Pretty, kind of quiet after the streets, but go early to miss the hordes.

Very very old temple that's perhaps different than what you'll see elsewhere in China. The frescos are pretty impressive and I'm surprised at how few people were here. We were there on a Sunday afternoon, and were literally the only 2 there when we arrived. We rode bikes there, which is an adventure in itself. There is a lot of large trucks on the dusty road, and of course the typical anarchy that is Chinese traffic. The distance is really not bad on a bike, but definitely not recommended if you're scared of Chinese traffic.

This temple is very old, and was saved from destruction during the cultural revolution. The old statues were not restored, and are still in their wonderful original style. Well worth seeing!

This place was unbelievable for China. We went on a Ching Ming Sunday, expecting it to be packed, but there were 6 other people and us. Very peaceful, you could here the birds singing and such an untypically Chinese tourist destination. The temple is interesting in that it has a very old wooden structure (partly hidden/supported?) by bricks, with interesting statues and a 1000 year old tree (or what's left of it!). Go for the rural drive, the rural setting and most of all for the untypical peace and quiet.

...looks like nobody in Shanxi Province or China is taking care about of the complex. The color of sculptures disappeared, all facades and inside of buildings are in terrible conservation, the dust are accumulating in all sculptures, etc.I could see only one positive aspect on this visit, nobody beyond me and my friend were there. Maybe, this can explain why the authorities forgotten the complex, only a few tourist pay a visit on that site.

There's only one thing to see here: Wanfo (Ten Thousand Buddhas) Hall, the only surviving building of a once much-larger Buddhist monastery. But what a building it is! Built in 963, it's one of the oldest wood buildings in China, or in the world, for that matter. The architectural details---particularly the bracketing and eaves----are extraordinary.Inside is an ensemble fo eleven painted-clay Buddhist sculptures, also dating from the tenth century---both beautiful and intensely spiritual.Zhenguo is a short drive (12k) outside Pingyao and is surrounded by cornfields. It's completely off the tourist circuit. We were there for half an hour, and during that time only two other visitors dropped by.
